Further down the riv-er there is Kittery Point, defended byFort McClary; close by is what isleft of the old Pepperrell house, so 76 New Castle and the ^([ALK5Kck,l^GHT. famous in colonial times, and stillmassive in its old age. At the mouthof the river and harbor is WhalesBack Light; while a few miles out tosea are the Isles of Shoals. AcrossLittle Harbor is Odiornes Poiut, thesite of Mason Hall, where Thompsonand his little party settled in 162o. The show place of the neighborhoodis the old Governor Wentworth man-sion, which is open to the public for a small fee. This fee becomes neces-sary for repair and protection of thecouncil chamber, the best specimen ofof a colonial interior in this property should, be owned andcared for by New Hampshire, for it isthe most interesting monument of thecolonial period in the state. It wasbuilt in 1750 by Governor BenningWentworth. He was governor ofNew Hampshire for twenty-five years, New Castle and the Piscataqua. 77
