It would take many pages ofthe Manual merely to enumerate the different items ofthis imposing collection. The material collected by Jared Sparks, the first ofour Revolutionary writers and for many years the auth-ority on Washington, involved titanic labor extendingover many years. His Life of Washington contains12 volumes and includes nearly all of Washingtonspersonal correspondence a collection involving years ofpatient research and constant investigation. [364]. Concerning the financial cost of this part of thework to these men, Bancroft estimated at one time thatseventy-five thousand dollars would not be when one considers trie vast amount of foreigntravel also involved and the number of years spent in thetask, this sum does not seem exaggerated, especially whenone considers the expenditures of Mr. Stokes in con-nection with his present work on the Iconog
