Athlete's foot, showing infected skin between the toes of a 71 year old woman. Athlete's foot (tinea pedis) is the most common form of ringworm, a fungal infection of the surface of the skin that particularly affects the scalp (tinea capitis) and feet. It is caused by various species of fungi including Microsporum, Trichophyton & Epidermophyton, which feed off the protein keratin found in skin. It is highly contagious and is spread by direct contact or via infected material. Ringworm is treated with an antifungal agent.
