The Twentieth Michigan Infantry had its origin in the call of PresidentLincoln for three hundred thousand more, issued July 1, 1862, pursuant tothe memorial of the Governors of the loyal states. Michigans quota, underthat call, was 11,686. After conferences between the authorities of the wardepartment and the Governor and military officers of the state, the conclusionwas reached that one regiment of infantry should be recruited from each of thesix congressional districts, and one from Wayne county; and the remainder ofthe quota should be made up of cavalry and artillery from the state at large,and recruits for the existing regiments. The Seventeenth Regiment was alreadyorganized and well advanced toward completion, so that the seven new infantryregiments were numbered from 18 to 24, inclusive.
