Also, the colonists hadall come, as generations before and after them,with dreams of ease and plenty to be enjoyedwithout work in Florida. So it was not longbefore peremptory commands and the strictdiscipline necessary to preserve order in thenew colony brought about a clash between theunruly element and their directors. 47. CHAPTER IIITHE UPRISING OF 1768<i) LL seemed peaceful and busy onAugust 8, 1768, two months afterthe last colonist had arrived atNew Smyrna, when Turnbullbrought some planters from theCarolinas down to see the progress his set-tlers had made. The distinguished visi-tors rode over the fields where brush andpine stumps were burning, the fresh-cutoutlines of the farms were just showing andthe great wharfs and wells were be-ing built of coquina.
