The upper part of theinterosseous membrane ; the opening above this membrane is for the passageof the anterior tibial KNEE JOINT. 151 Fig. 74. The alar ligaments are two fringed folds of syno^^dal membrane, extending from the ligamentum mucosum, along the edges of the massof fat to the sides of the patella. The synovial memhrane of theknee joint is by far the most exten-sive in the skeleton. It invests thecartilaginous surfaces of the con-dyles of the femur, of the head oftibia, and of the inner surface of thepatella; it covers both surfaces ofthe semilunar fibro-cartilages, andis reflected upon the crucial liga-ments, and upon the inner surfaceof the ligaments which form the cir-cumference of the joint. On eachside of the patella, it lines the ten-dinous aponeuroses of the vastus in-ternus and vastus externus muscles, and forms a pouch of considerablesize between the extensor tendonand the front of the femm. Italso forms the folds in the interiorof the joint, called ligamentummucosum, and ligamenta superior pouch of the synovialmembra
