At Logstown, Washington met Native Americans and made his first speech to them (pictured in this 1903 illustration).
In October 1753, George Washington, with the rank of Major at the time, set out, with seven men, for a French outpost near Lake Erie. His mission was to find out where forts had been built, how large a force of troops had cross the lakes and to to learn all he could about the French who had set up a flag on soil england claimed. The journey was across 560 miles and through rough terrain. At Logstown, Washington met Native Americans and made his first speech to them (pictured in this 1903 illustration). He told them his mission and asked for men as guides and gave beads as gifts and offerings of peace and goodwill.
