Chilean fox solitaire in The Atacama Desert, Chile
It is the largest fox in Chile and can be found throughout the country from sea level to 4,500 meters above sea level, between Arica and Tierra del Fuego. Foxes are opportunistic hunters and feed on small mammals such as hares, mice and other rodents such as degú and vizcacha, as well as birds and fruits such as molle and peumo. It is usually a solitary animal and can be observed during the day. It inhabits different habitats, from rugged and mountainous terrains above the forest line, to deep valleys and open deserts, pampas or temperate forests.
