This test involves irrigating the external auditory canal of the ear with water (either warm or cold) or air. The effect on the vestibular system (specifically the endolymph of the horizontal semicircular canal) produces a brainstem response that triggers involuntary eye movements. The precise reaction can help pinpoint brain defects that may be causing the disorder. The test is usually a subtest of the electronystagmography (ENG) battery of tests, used to diagnose conditions such as vertigo or other disorders of the vestibular (balance) system.
