Scrotal hernia. Close-up of the groin of a male patient with a large indirect inguinal (scrotal) hernia and retracted penis (centre left). A hernia occurs when an organ, such as a loop of the intestine, protrudes from a weak area in the body wall. Here, the intestines are protruding through a weak area in the abdominal muscles, into the inguinal canal and have descended to the bottom of the scrotum. This has caused the scrotum to enlarge so much that it has completely enveloped the penis, causing it to retract.
