Prior to March 10, 1864, the county seat of Lewiscounij was not Lowville but to that time a petition had been circulatedand signed by many citizens of the county, whichwas presented to the legislature of the state, and onthe luth day of March, 1864, an act of the legisla-ture of the state was passed changing the countyseat of the county from Martinsburg toj^ Lewis County Court House. ThTbuildhig, now the Court House, had been con-structed by the people of Lowville at a cost of $6,-000, partly bytown tax and partly by subscription,for a town hall, with the intention that it wouldsome time thereafter be used as a court the change of the county seat from Martins-burgh to Lowville in 1S64, the town hall, now thecourt house, was deeded to Lewis county, reserv-ing the right to the town to use it for election and ty-jrafc^^ f^.^-it^^^^ 4S TOWN ANT) ^ OF LOWVILLE. other special purposes.
