British Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876. It was led by George Strong nares (1831-1915) and was sent by the British Admiralty to attempt to reach the north Pole. Two ships. "HMS Alert" and "HMS Discovery", captained by Henry Frederick Stephenson, sailed from Portsmouth on May 29, 1875. The expedition failed to reach the north Pole; however the coasts of Ellesmere Island and Greenland were explored. "Discovery" crew members hauling a sledge to the Cape Rawson Depot. Engraving.
