View S of the central platform, ditch & earthen bank of Broomend of Crichie circle-henge, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK: avenue stone to rear
View S of the central platform, ditch & earthen bank of Broomend of Crichie circle-henge, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK, once part of an extensive late Neolithic ceremonial & funerary complex. Two stones survive from a circle of six inside the Class II henge with entrances at N & S, the third (centre) is a relocated Pictish symbol stone. The stone to the far rear survives from a wide avenue of standing stones which led S/N to/from the River Don. The avenue continued N to another stone circle. Deposits of cremated bone were made in urns, pits & cists within the circle-henge & an inhumation placed in a cist at the bottom of a shaft grave at its centre. Other burials & ritual deposits were made throughout the complex which was largely destroyed in the C19th.
