Spear, William Edward, son of Archibald Angelica (Branton) Spear, was born in Rock-land, Me., Jan. 2, 1849. He was educated in the]mblic schools and at Bowdoin College, from which EDMUND D. Then he settledin his native city and imnieillately hci^an generalpractice. This he soon abancloiu-d, however, that hemight devote himself wholly to ihe treatment of dis-eases of the ear, which he had made a special stud\.He afterwards served for many years as an assistantsurgeon to the Massachusetts Charitable Eye andEar Infirmary, and in 1888 was appointed auralsurgeon in that institution, where he is still on duty ;and in the out-jnitient department of the CityHospital he holds a like position.
