Silhouette view of seaweed fishing corral standing in the waters near a beach with seabirds, Quetalmahue, Chiloe Island, Chile

Locals collect and lay out seaweed to dry along the coast of Chiloe Island. Some is eaten as local delicacy. Some is farmed for the production of agar-agar, a gelatinous substance used as an emuslifying or thickening agent in the food and cosmetics industries. Seaweed has been an important 'cash crop' in Chile since 1959. The industry employs some 3000 fishermen. Japan is an important export market. Here we see a seaweed fishing corral, flooded at high tide, at the edge of Golfo de Quetalmahue, Quetalmahue.
