Mr. Choate was married in Utica, N. Y., Nov7, 1855, to Elizabeth W., daughter of Edward andHannah (Thompson) Carlile, of Providence, R. I. Ofthis union were five children: Edward C, Sarah C.(wife of J. Montgomery Sears), Margaret M. (wifeof Nathaniel I. Bowditch), Helen, and Charles , Jr. The last-named is a successful lawyer inBoston. Ranney and NathanMorse, he argued his first brief before the full bench ofthe Massachusetts Su])reme Court, and won his success was followed by an almost unbroken lineof legal victories, quite unprecedented in a young man,until, at the age ofthirty-six, Mr. Dilla-way retired frompractice to devotehis entire time to hisvast financial inter-ests. Born in Bos-ton, Feb. 17, 1852,Mr. Dillaway is adescendant of one ofthe oldest Bostonfamilies. He waseducated in the pub-lic schools, and aftergraduating at theEnglish High Schoolhe took a specialcourse at Harvard,graduating from thelaw department i nthe
