When the Nyriragongo volcano erupted on 18th Jan 2002 lava flowed into Goma in Democratic Republic of Congo, destroying one third of the town and killing 45 people. The 3,469-metre Nyiragongo volcano is one of eight scattered along the borders of Rwanda, Congo and Uganda, and is only about 10 kilometres from Camp, Bukavu, on the site of a former Peace Corps traing centre, for people displaced from Goma by the lava flow following volcanic eruption, Jan 2002 Here family members braid each other's hair.
