Pirate Boat Sunrise over the River Mersey, city centre skyline, wooden sculpture, docks and harbour. The Black Pearl is an interactive upcycled driftwood artwork created and maintained by a small group of passionate pirates on the New Brighton shore. A replica of a three masted pirate man-of-war, it is almost entirely constructed from salvaged materials, scrap, waste, disposal, stuff, wreck, equipment, raw material, environmental driftwood artwork found on the Liverpool Merseyside beach.

The artists behind the much-loved Black Pearl shared the sad news on Facebook, telling fans: "It is with heavy hearts we pirates have to announce that following much soul searching the rebuild of our beloved Black Pearl will not be going ahead." The driftwood pirate ship proved to be immensely popular with the visitors when it first became a fixture in New Brighton's aptly-named Cosy Cove in 2013. In May that year it was set on fire by vandals, but rebuilt with the help of the local community. Then in December 2013 the highest tides in 30 years battered Merseyside's coastline and the Black Pearl was again destroyed. The ship - named after Captain Jack Sparrow's vessel in the Pirates of the Caribbean films - was again rebuilt, this time closer to the shore to help her weather future storms. But in February 2020 the much-loved artwork was destroyed again, leaving fans of the attraction "heartbroken". Back in June last year the go-ahead was given to rebuild the ship after getting backing from the council. However, posting on The Black Pearl New Brighton Facebook page this week, organisers said a "unanimous decision" has been made not to rebuild due to various reasons.
