The notes on the descending sideof the glissando are, however, added more for symmetry of appearancethan for any other reason. On that side the top and bottom noteswould be quite sufficient for all practical purposes. It is more usualto write the single complete octave of notes at the beginning of thepassage. Strausss method, however, is clear and logical. It mightwell be made a standard for such passages. With regard to the length of glissandos anything less than aboutfour or five octaves is liable to sound tame. The player can easilyget over the whole of his compass in one second of time, and, if theglissando is written too short, he is forced either to insert a loop orto perform it in an ineffectively deliberate manner. For all glissandos the Harpist must be given a few beats or bars—according to the changes in
