St Basil's Cathedral of the Kremlin in the Red Square with its towers, domes and decorative patterns was built between 1555 and 1561 to commemorate the capture of the Khanate of Kazan. It is a multi-tented church with distinctive onion domes and is perceived as symbolic of the unique position of Russia between Europe and Asia.
