The first newspaper in the place was commencedin 1773 by Isaiah Thomas. The Herald was established in extensive conflagration, commencing May 31, 1811, swept awaythe buildings covering an area of sixteen acres, and checked for manyyears the prosperity of the town. The first institution for savings wasestablished in 1820, being the third in the State. The deposits fromits 10,000 depositors amount to nearly $4,250,000. It now occupies a. The introduction of the cotton-manufacture in 1836, the opening ofthe Eastern Railroad (1840), and the incorporation of the town with apart of Newbury as a city (April 17, 1851), have each, in turn, served toadvance the prosperity of the place, and to render it one of the mostthriving, as it is one of the most beautiful, cities in the Common-wealth. The present mayor is Warren Currier. Eminent men: Tristram Dalton (1738-1817), a statesmanand scholar; William Bartlett (1748-1841), a benevolent mer-chant; William Plummer (1739-1850), a distinguished politician;Dudley Atkins Tyng, (1760-1829), an able lawyer; Parker Boyd (1764-1830), a gallant soldier; Jacob Per-kins (1766-1849), a celebrated inventor; William Ingalls, (1768-1857), an eminent physician; John Lowell, (1
