Naval divers in diving suits. 19th-century diving suit and apparatus being used by Turkish naval divers in Istanbul, then capital of the Ottoman Empire. The diving equipment is labelled with the company name Siebe Gorman. This British company was founded by Augustus Siebe in 1819, trading as Siebe Gorman by 1830 when they started making diving equipment. The pump at centre, operated by the large handles either side, provided air for the helmets worn on watertight canvas diving suits. This photograph dates from circa 1890. It was taken at the Imperial Naval Arsenal and is from a volume on the Turkish Navy's personnel, ships, naval fire brigade and police.
