The Atlantic Coast line has been increasing the life ofdriving boxes by placing brass liners on the shoe and wedgefaces. The box is dovetailed and heated, and is thenjacked open before the brass liner can be poured, whichtakes a great deal of time. In addition, it is possible toobtain only an average of one shopping out of brass linersas the metal is so soft that it either works loose or poundsout at the ends of the box. The illustration shows a box with a steel boiler plateliner applied. With this method it is necessary to true up 45 Bevel. This weld-ing is done by an electric welder. The plates are pulleddown solid by means of two countersunk .>4 in. screws andthe heads of the screws are welded to prevent their gettingloose. This method of reclaiming driving boxes is a greatdeal cheaper than using the brass liners, and it is believedthat it will result in at least twice the amount of servicefrom the box.
