The location of the firebox, im-mediately above the driving wheels, ne-cessitated this arrangement. The mainframes are vanadium steel castings, andthe articulated joint has a single hingeconnection. The cylinders are all lined with hardbushings, 5^-in. thick. The high and lowpressure pistons are of cast steel, thelow pressure having tail rods. Steam isdistributed to the high pressure cylin-ders by inside admission piston valves13 ins. in diameter, and to the low pres-sure cylinders by balanced slide low pressure ports have a width of24 ins. The valves are driven by Wal-schaerts gear, and the radius rods bal-ance each other, the high pressure rodsbeing down, and the low pressure up, inforward motion. The combining l
