Mauna Kea Silversword (Argyroxiphium sandwicense ssp. sandwicense) after flowering - near Mauna Kea Visitor Center - Big Island, Hawaii, USA The Manua Kea Silversword is a Hawaiian indigenous plant. At the end of its life it grows a spectacular flowering stalk that can reach several feet of height. The silversword flowers only once, produces seeds and then it dies. The Mauna Kea Silversword found on the slopes of Mauna Kea is different from the Haleakala Silversword in having a longer flowering stalk, fewer flowers, longer and straighter leaves.
