Contemporary World War One illustration of British troops in action in the early stages of the Battle of the Somme (July 1 - November 18 1916). Entitled "County Regiments to the Fore on the Somme", it depicts county regiments - Lancashire, Surrey, Kent, Essex, Bedford and Norfolk - fighting their way into the French village of Montauban. A first detachment of infantry has already penetrated the village whilst a second is seen sweeping over a sunken road towards the objective. The image appeared in The War Illustrated periodical in August 1916. Artist unknown.
