Histone deacetylase 2 inhibitor, molecular model. This molecule inhibits the action of the enzyme histone deacetylase, which modifies complexes of protein and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) known as histones in a way that allows gene expression. Therefore histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDIs) act to inhibit gene expression. HDIs act as mood stabilisers and anticonvulsants and are being studied for use in neurodegenerative diseases and as anti-cancer drugs.
