The facility's day room had sofas and armchairs in front of an open fire. MIDLANDS, IRELAND: STEP INSIDE one of Ireland?s most UNSETTLING abandoned asylums ? complete with a morgue and onsite chapel. In one image, a metal table ? used for transporting corpses ? sat in an abandoned chapel below the cross of Jesus Christ. In another, an abandoned logbook sat left on a shelf titled ?Ward 16 ? Night Sedation,? dated December 10, 2007. The incredible images were captured by hobbyist urban explorer Cathal (48) from Dublin, Ireland, who is known online as Uncharted Ireland. Cathal spent four hours exploring the abandoned asylum in Ireland?s Midlands region which is known amongst urban explorers as ?Asylum Cathal captured the images with his Canon 5D Mark II camera. The creepy mental health facility dates back to the 1930s and has an onsite church and morgue still containing eerie reminders of days gone by including medical equipment and a metal coffin. In the late 20th century, Ireland began to deinstitutionalise its asylums. Once the pillars of local economies, asylums fell out of favour when the horrors of what went on inside began to escape. Asylum Y closed its doors in 2010. @uncharted_ireland
