The cruise liner MSC Meraviglia with up to 5,000 passengers moored in a deep water berth on the outskirts of Kirkwall, Orkney
When large cruise liners came to Kirkwall they used to have to moor offshore and passengers would come into the town on tenders. Kirkwall has now built a deep water berth at Hatston, just outside the city so that cruise liner passengers can disembark on to land and be transported by bus to various sites of interest. The impact of 5,000 passengers visiting the sites in the local area is considerable though many passengers do not visit Kirkwall itself and therefore do not spend money there.
