Old Man Weaving Ropes At The Downtown Market, Keren
Keren, formerly known as Cheren, is the second-largest city in Eritrea. It is situated 90 kilometers northwest of Asmara at an altitude of 1,390 meters. The town sprawls on a wide basin surrounded by granitic mountains on all sides. It serves as the capital of the Anseba region, and is home to the Bilen ethnic group. The city is inhabited both by a Muslim and Catholic community and comes alive on Mondays when the weekly market takes place. The downtown market is the place where men congregate, drink tea, or coffee and purchase clothes made by local tailors.
