Byrd Glacier, seen from space. Enhanced-colour satellite image of the Byrd Glacier on the coast of Antarctica. The strength of the blue colour is related to ice density. Byrd Glacier is at right and the outflow of Darwin Glacier is at top left. The coastline of Antarctica runs diagonally across the frame. At top right is part of the permanent ice of the Ross Ice Shelf. Many characteristic features of glaciers are seen here, most prominently the ridges which run parallel to the direction of flow. Note how these lines spread far out across the ice shelf. This image was gathered by the Landsat-1 satellite on 16 January 1974.
