St Elizabeth of Hungary and St Lucy, 1878. Elizabeth (1207-1231) was the daughter of Andras II of Hungary. After the death in 1227 of her husband Louis IV, Landgrave of Thuringia, from plague while on crusade, she joined the Franciscan order and cared for the poor, becoming noted for her asceticism and piety. St Lucy (d304) was martyred by the sword at Syracuse during the persecution of Christians under the Emperor Diocletian (245-313).
