R., which will serve the tumiels for the Hudson and East Rivers, the new New York terminal at 32d St. and Seventh Ave., and thatpart of the Long Island R. R. which is being converted toelectricity. The turbines will have a capacity of electrical h. p. each and will dnve 5,500-kw. three-phase a. operating in parallel. Their overload capacity will be liver h. p. each. Lach generator will be directly cimnected toilie turbine shaft. Current will be delivered directly to the distribu-tion syslem at volts, no transformers being employed. Theturbine equiinnenl will operate under 200 lb. steam pressure, 28 and 175° F. superheat. Eleven Westinghouse turbines ofpractically the same size are now under construction for electricrailway service in this country and abroad. An l-^ffective Trolley Ihe accompanying illustrations show a new trolley catcher whichhas been perfected by Johnson & Morton, of Utica, N. Y., andwhich depends upon the simplest principles for its effective opera-lion. The trolley cord is wound on the drum by means of a plaincoiled spring 15 ft. long, which winds upon a shaft i in. in diam-eter, one end of which rests in a bearing, open at thetop, at the back of the case. When the trolley leaves thewire the cord starts very suddenly to unwind and thisaction instantly lifts the drum from its bearing beforethe cord has been unwound more than a fraction of aninch. By this means a ratchet on the drumhead isbrought into engagement with a stationary tooth at-tached lo the case, which prevents the turning of thedrum, with the result that the trolley pole is stoppedin its upward course as suddenly as it started. In fact, the action is so rapid and positive that barely half an inch of cordis paid out before the catcher operates, thereby
