Nicolas Remene / Le Pictorium - Bamako - Mali: Urbanisation, Development and Climate Change - 19/2/2021 - Mali / Bamako District / Bamako - Hundreds of carts loaded with household waste arrive daily on this hillside next to many of Bamako's universities, creating over the years a mountain of waste that burns and emits toxic fumes every day. Many people, including women and children, work in the middle of this mountain of rubbish to collect and sort recyclable objects or materials, such as paper, cardboard, glass, plastics, aluminium or iron. Each person then sells his or her loot by the kilo to wholesalers, who in turn sell it to the various recycling channels.
