The ^-reater portion of the populationis supported by these large and splendid works, the proprietorsof which have an establishment, equally extensive, in the city. Phila-delphia is justly distinguished for its chemical productions, and thefirm above mentioned probably stands at the head of this descriptionof manufacture—one of the most complicated and arduous, we mayadd, that human industry and capital could embark THE WIS 8 A II 1 <; K O N 41 The vicinity of the Falls is much frequented, in the summer time,by the citizens of the tOAvn. They ride out here to obtain an romantic and picturesque Wissahickon empties into the Schuyl-kill a short distance above the village, and this is the principal sourceof attraction. Its banks are bold and rocky, overgrown with statelytrees, whose shade affords a cool retreat from the heat, and dust, andparched and sultry avenues of the city. There are several hotels,or places of refreshment, both in the village and on the Wissahickon,and there is no lack of material to gratify or amuse the visitor. Thedi-ive from the city is very refreshing—the road being remarkablysmootk, and studded all along with handsome cottages and tastefulscenery, as well as objects of historical and general interest.
