On being licensed, heacted for four months as assistant to Paterson at Bainsford, and was thenasked to start a new congregation atCraigneuk, near Motherwell. In thismining district a wooden church waserected, and good work was being done informing the nucleus of a congregation;but within four months Mr. Brown wascalled to Tony. The congregation, which was then wor-shipping in the old church in Sinclair Road(at that time known as Church Street), wasalmost exclusively composed of fisherpeople. Torry was then a fishing village. Rev. Edward Brown. standing entirely by itself and with a lifeand an interest all its own. For someyears after Mr. Browns settlement thelittle community had to face a rather hardstruggle. The fishing industry was thenin a transition stage. Trawling and othernew departures had upset the fixed orderof things, and a time of crisis had to bepassed through. The fishermen werejealous of their rights and privileges, andafraid lest their whole prospects shouldhe placed in jeopardy, and in such tryingtimes Mr. Brown proved a friend took an interest in all their affairs, andin the conferences and agitations of thetime he placed his services freely at theirdisp sal. By-and-by, however, the timeof stress and uncertainty passed, and anew Torry came into being. Building operations were soon in progress in alldirections, a new population crowded in,and the whole aspect of the district under-went a transformation. Naturally thechanged stat
