The fairs are on May 6th and 7th, for cows andpigs, and on Trinity Monday and Tuesday. The latter,a very ancient fair, is proclaimed by the mayor withparticular ceremony on the preceding Saturday, andcontinues till the Wednesday noon following; it is prin-cipally for horses, cattle, and pigs, and is held on theeastern side of the town, near the site of an ancient her-mitage which was occupied by William Geoffrey, towhom its revenue, arising from standings, &c, wasoriginally granted. A court of pie-poudre is attached toit, and during its continuance all persons are free fromarrest for debt within the precincts of the borough. Corporation Obverse. Reverse.
