Respiratory system. Computer artwork showing the organs of the human respiratory system. At top is the larynx (voicebox), which leads onto the trachea (windpipe, white tube vertical). This splits into two bronchi, one for each lung (left and right). Inside the lungs the bronchi further divide into many bronchioles (white, branching). Each bronchiole becomes smaller, finally ending in alveoli (tiny air sacs, not seen). The lungs are the site of gaseous exchange; oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide is removed.
