Bronchoscope image of the interior of the bronchus (airway) supplying the left superior (upper) lobe of the human lung. This image shows its division into two smaller bronchi. The bronchi are the branches of the tree of airways that supply the lungs, the trunk of which is the trachea. The trachea divides into two main bronchi, serving the left & right lungs. In each lung, five lobar bronchi undergo successive divisions to become tiny bronchioles, which terminate as alveoli, the air sacs where gaseous exchange takes place. The bronchi are supported by cartilage and lined with a mucous-secreting epithelium.
