Put the cheesecloth screen on as soon as you sow theseed; it prevents the ground from baking and the seedwill germinate much better and faster. The amount ofseed can be reduced one-third or more for a given numberof plants if the screen is used. Care should be exercisednot to sow seed too thickly under a screen. Plants are a httle more tender and watery when raisedunder a screen. To overcome this it is best to remove thescreen a week or ten days before the plants are ready to 26 LATE CABBAGE. Often, in avery few days, if the weather is warm and wet, the plantswill double in size. If such conditions prevail you willhave to be on hand to transplant, or they will grow tall andspindhng, which is very undesirable. I have been screening my seed bed for a number ofyears, and I am so well pleased with the results that ifthere were no insects to bother, I would continue just thesame. You are almost sure of a good stand of plants undera screen, no matter what the weather. One year it was so dry that the seed in an open bedwould not germinate until the bed was wet artificially, but those under the screen came along al
