Downham village, bridge over river, Lancashire,UK ,Europe

Downham is a small village near Clitheroe in the heart of the ribble valley. It sits under the shadow of Pendle hill , made famous as the home of the Pendle witches. The pendle witches are the most famous witches in English legal history, being hanged in 1612 in Lancaster gaol, for the murder of 17 people in and around the forest of people. Claty effigies were made of the victim and left to dry out and break up causing the victims to fall ill and die. Authentic confessions exist from the witches who incrimenated themselves and each other with confessions made voluntarily ( torture for information did not exist in English gaols at the time). More recently, Downham has been the home of the 1960's film Whistle down the wind and the BBC drama Born and Bred. The village is owned by the Ashetton family who stipulate that no TV ariels, road markings, or modern extensions be put on the properties, thus retaining the charm of the traditional Lancashire village.
