Pelikaan voedt zijn jongen met zijn eigen bloed; Mirakel van Amsterdam as a symbol of Christ nestles in a thorn crown and feeds his boy with his own blood. The bird shows more resemblance to a bird of prey such as an eagle. A snake with a bird head curls around a cross. In the two explanatory verses, the bird is called a pelican.
