To Edward Somerset, second Marquisof Worcester, appears to be due the creditof making the first useful steam purpose was to raise water, having apair of displacement chambers from eachof which alternately water was forced bysteam from an independent boiler, or,perhaps, by applying heat to the chamberitself while the other vessel was allowedto refill. Lord Worcesters description ofthe engine in his Century of Inventions. (1663) is obscure and the drawings areextinct. It is not clear whether thesuction of a vacuum was used for raisingthe water as well as the direct pressure ofsteam.
