Our endless tire is a greatimprovement over the tires made in sections. Thewagon tires as they are rnade now are, I think, as near MODERN BLACKSMITHING 83 right as they can be, in regard to size of iron, in pro-portion to the wheel. But it is different with buggytires. I hold that they are all made too light to be ofany protection to the fellows. I understand the reasonwhy they are made this way, but if a man wants alight rig, let that be the exception and not the Tire should not be less than one-fourth of an inchthick for seven-eighths wide, and five-sixteenths foran inch wide and over. EXPANSION OF THE TIRE A tire four feet in diameter will expand two inchesand a quarter, or three-sixteenths of an inch to thefoot. Steel tire expands less. This is the expansionof red heat. If heated less it expands less, but it is notrouble to make the tire expand for all the draw itneeds. 84 MODERN BLACKSMITHING A furnace for tire heating comes handy in citieswhere there is no chance for making a fire outside, butevery smith that has room for a fire outside will dobetter to heat the tire that way. Dont build a tire-heating furnace in the shop if wood is to be used forfuel, because the heat and smoke will turn in yourface as soon as the doors of the furnace are opened.
