Since the brachial valve would have been in motion much more than the pedicle valve, it would obviously have preferred to lighten its load as much as possible. For these reasons, the setae, and the corre- sponding mantle canals, could have become enlarged in the pedicle valve as com- pared with the brachial valve. However there is no suggestion that the setae and vascular system became atrophied in the brachial valve ; there are rare specimens of Eoplectodonta (for example the individual figured in Plate 5, figs. 3 and 6) in which the mantle canal.
