New pictures show how Ibiza’s first super club, which once attracted thousands of tourists to concerts and all-night parties, every year, now lies abandoned in the hills above San Jose. The once-famous Festival Club, which opened in 1972, has now been reclaimed by nature, with trees and grass taking over the one-time glitzy venue. The club was built in the middle of a pine forest on the old road between Ibiza Town and San Antonio. In its heyday tourists were bussed to the complex to enjoy its bars, restaurant, amphitheatre, huge outdoor terraced seating area, outdoor dance floor and several indoor dance areas. At the height of its success it offered great food, performance art, mock bullfighting and music until the early hours of the morning. But the club closed after just two years when the oil crisis pushed up airfares and saw less holidaymakers travelling to Ibiza. It made several attempts to re-open but was eventually left to go to ruin and new aerial photos show how the once-grand buildings have now crumbled and been covered in graffiti. Trees can now be seen growing out of the staged seating area as the pine forest takes over the land. The dance floor now has tiles and bricks missing and the walls of the complex are now covered in colourful murals after becoming an artist’s paradise.
