Mr. John Rogers, the aged minister of St. Sepulchres church,Snow Hill, London, was the proto-martyr; he was the first sacrifice,strictly speaking, offered up in this reign to popery, and led the wayfor those sufferers, whose blood has been the foundation, honour, andglory of the church of England. This Mr. Rogers had been some time chaplain to the English fac-tory at Antwerp. There he became acquainted with Mr. Tindal, andassisted him in his translation of the New Testament There wereseveral other worthy protestants there at that time, most of whom hadbeen driven out of England, on account of the persecutions for thesix articles in the latter end of the reign of Henry VIII.
