The Battle of the Atlantic 1939-1945 Anti-Submarine Weapons: The Fairlie Mortar, better known as the 'Five Wide Virgins' installed on the forecastle of HMS WHITEHALL. The weapon was not a success and was withdrawn from service. Comment : this is not in fact the Fairlie mortar, which fired 20 x 20-pound projectiles. This appears to show the experimental Thornycroft long-range depth charge thrower.
