Special Drill Socket THE advent of the expenive high speed drills hasbrought before all drill users more strongly thanever before the problem of the loss occasioned by twistedtangs and broken shanks. With the ordinary carbonsteel drills, notwithstanding the fact that the loss wasconsiderable from this source, it was generally neglected, and considered as an unavoidable evil. However, whenthe tang was twisted off, or the shank broken on a highspeed drill of approximately four times the value of an. ordinary drill, and this expensive tool thereby rendereduseless, the men in charge of such matters began to givethe subject some serious thought. About that time the American Specialty Company, Chi-cago, came forward with the Lse-Em-Lp drill socket is similar to the stand taper socket with twoexceptions; one that it has a Mat on it- inside surface, and the other that the drift slot is somewhat longer thanon the ordinary socket to facilitate the driving out oftangless drills. With the socket described it is only necessary togrind a flat on the remaining portion of the shank aftersame has been broken off, or the tang twisted off, inorder to put the drill into immediate use, or if a flat isground on a new drill the liability of trouble from thissource is entirely eliminated. Several of the standard drill makers are now furnish-ing their drills flatted to fit this socket at the sameprice as the ordinary drill. It will be noted that flat-t
