The establishment of this delightful old home withits broad acres occurred at the time of the inaugurationof President Monroe in 1817. The place was inherited byMr. Monroe from his uncle, a bachelor by the name ofJones. The house, almost as it now stands, was com-pleted in 1820, and was the delight and pride of PresidentMonroe during his two terms as President of the UnitedStates. Many noted personages, among them Lafayette,were entertained lavishly at this palatial country Baythorp Sutton—Imported Hackney Stallion, ownedby Hon. Henry Fairfax, Aldie, Va. Mr. Fairfax, the present owner, is a fancier and breederof one of the best classes of horses in the world, namely,the Hackneys. His noted horse Matchless is well known,not only throughout the United States, but abroad. Hehas been a great prize winner, and was champion acrossthe water. At the time of his purchase Mr. Fairfax alsosecured three prize-winning mares, with which the nu-cleus of the finest stud of Hackneys in the United Stateswas formed. Mr. Fairfax keeps constantly on hand from150 to 200 head of horses and a fine flock of Shropshiresheep.
